The Party

After returning from the wedding at almost 3 AM, we went to bed and slept in a bit – until about 8 AM. After getting ready, we went to Rohini’s place for lunch. I again feasted on the irresistible mangoes and other foods laid out for us. Since I had been roped in to joining in on a group dance to a ridiculous song called “Kasu, Panam, Dhuddu, Money,” we were supposed to go to Rahul’s place in Maharani Bagh to practice the moves. However, after lunch we discovered that there had been no power at Rahul’s place all morning and no one had been able to practice. The girls who were there were coming back to change for the party. The party was for the “young folks” (mostly friends of the couple) and was in a night club called Spasso’s in Saket.

When the girls (Anu and Swetha) returned, they tried to teach me the moves since our next meeting would be at the nightclub. Basically, we were going to be learning the moves separately hoping it would all come together when we got “on stage” at the night club. The problem was that the slow Internet connection made it impossible to play the song on youtube. So, she just showed me a bunch of moves that I was supposed to repeat without really knowing much about the actual song or beat to which the moves were to be performed.

We went back to the hotel where I had a short nap and then we headed to the nightclub. We found the place with some trouble but were still on time. The party was a lot of fun. There was a photo booth, Sheila had taken charge of an area with a polaroid camera where she took pictures and had people write messages to the couple. There was, as expected, plenty of food and drink. I had a few beers and joined in some dancing. Later in the evening, the parents and friends of the couple offered some toasts and it was time for our choreographed dance. I was asked to introduce it on the spot and I babbled my way through some messages to the couple before we launched into the dance. It was a disaster as I really didn’t know when to switch from one move to the next. But, by that time, I really don’t think anyone cared since the drinking was in full swing. It lasted barely a minute and we bounded off the floor.

Last call was at 12:30 and we finally closed the club at about 1:30 AM. There was an announcement of an “after-party” at one of Sid’s friend’s place and I assumed Sheila and I would go back to the hotel as it was already late and the hotel in Gurgaon was a good 30-45 minutes away. But, Sheila was keen on going to the after-party and there was enough peer pressure that I agreed to go along. The party continued with more chatting and drinking (by this time I had switched to water as I usually do during extended parties). It is always amusing to converse with drunk people when you are sober and I chatted up a good many people. When the party showed no sign of slowing at about 2:30 AM, I asked Rahul to call Sheila and me a cab to head back. While we were waiting for the cab, the power went out and a couple of people decided to leave and we hitched a ride. It was almost 4 AM by the time we got back to the hotel.
